
Ymca For people seeking a healthier lifestyle as part of their New Year’s resolutions, the YMCA of Honolulu is offering a plan to help individuals achieve their health and wellness goals.Members who join the YMCA on January 8, 2011 will get a four-week Jumpstart Program, which includes four weeks with a certified personal wellness coach.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 15 to 20 percent of people stay with their exercise program long enough to see any health benefits.The Jumpstart Program teaches exercisers how to stick with their health and wellness program by supporting their short and long-term goals, which may include nutrition, exercise, pain and stress management and overall healthy living.The open house will offer group exercise classes and demonstrations, health-related vendors, family activities, prizes and a special Open House island-wide membership rate.
Through its 12 branches and two resident camps, the Y equips people of all ages and abilities to be their personal best in spirit, mind and body. Its full-service facilities bring families closer together as they build healthy lifestyles, and trained lifestyle coaches help set personal health and well-being goals. Actively Changing Together (ACT!) helps overweight children and their families incorporate healthy changes. Exercise and Thrive empowers cancer survivors to restore their strength, and the Diabetes Prevention Program is equipping community members at risk of the disease to take control.
Brown said the partnership in White County has been very successful, with participation rising from about 2,800 people to 4,000 people.That tells us that we do a good job in managing and providing quality services, and that we're reaching out to people that were not served," he said.The YMCA is part of an eight-county region, including Hall County. Brown said he is open to similar partnerships with the other counties in its service area, but he said no such discussions are taking place.In this economy, partnerships are extremely important," he said. "And the more that agencies, whether it's government, private (or) nonprofit, the more that we work together, the more benefit it will be for the community.
