Suchitra mitra Today, 3rd January 2011 Legendary Rabindra Sangeet exponent Suchitra Mitra died at around 1.30 pm at her residence due to a cardiac arrest. She was 86 years old.Born in 1924, Suchitra Mitra had for six decades kept music lovers enthralled with her mellifluous rendition of Tagore songs, and her records and CDs top the popularity ratings even today.Daughter of litterateur Saurindra Mohan Mukherjee, she received her first lessons from eminent singer-composer Pankaj Mullick and then went to Santiniketan with a scholarship.

Suchitra Mitra born in 19th September, 1924 died today after 86 years on 3rd January, 2011 while having lunch around 1:30 pm. A Singer, Composer, Professor and exponent of Rabindra Sangeet studied at the Scottish Church College , the University of Calcutta and Visva Bharati University in West Bengal India. She was a playback singer as well as have done acting in Bengali films.Suchitra Mitra a student of singing experts Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar received the Padma Shri in 1973.Apart from singing Mitra has also acted in many Bengali films. In the year 1973, the singer was honored with a Padmashree and also won the Tagore Hymn Prize in 1945 from the London Tagore Hymn Society. Moreover Mitra also won the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1986, the HMV Golden Disc Award including the Deshikottam of Visva- Bharati.

Mitra was given the first lesson in Rabindra’s music by Pankaj Mullick and since then she had developed her love for the songs and poetry of Rabindranath Tagore. The singer was said to have a natural gift of beautiful voice and expression.Suchitra Mitra (19th September, 1924 – 3rd January, 2011) was an Indian singer-composer, and a well respected exponent of Rabindra Sangeet or the songs of Bengal’s poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore. As an academic she remained a Professor and the Head of ‘Rabindra Sangeet Department’ at the Rabindra Bharati University for many years. She has also done playback singing and acted in a Bengali films as well and for many years remained associated with IPTA
